The benign, agricultural Orcadian landscape of today still
has reminders of its recent, violent past, when it was a strategic location in
terms of warfare. Scapa Flow, one of the world's most sheltered, natural,
harbours had been used to support trade, travel and conflict since prehistoric
times and during the two world wars, control of the waters between the Atlantic
and North Sea was essential to protect the British fleet. Visiting the Lyness museum
on Hoy and the derelict airfield at Twatt was a salient reminder of what we owe
to those who gave so much to protect future generations
